Tadeusz Estreicher

Tadeusz Estreicher (also Tadeusz Kazinierz Estreicher von Rozbierski ; born December 19, 1871 in Cracow , Austria-Hungary ; died April 8, 1952 in Cracow) was a Polish chemist and professor at the Universities of Freiburg (Switzerland) and Cracow . Estreicher was a prisoner in Sachsenhausen concentration camp .

Life

Tadeusz Estreicher came from the Krakow family of scholars of the Estreicher . He was a son of the historian Karol Estreicher the Elder. Ä. and brother of the legal historian Stanisław Estreicher . Tadeusz studied chemistry at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow , where he was a student of Karol Olszewski and Zygmunt Wróblewski . In 1897 he received his doctorate in organic chemistry in Cracow . After further studies in Berlin , Leipzig and with the later Nobel Prize winner William Ramsay in London, he became an assistant in 1899 and a private lecturer in 1904 at the University of Krakow, where he developed a hydrogen liquefier. In 1906 he was appointed professor for mineralogical and general chemistry at the Swiss University of Freiburg . In the academic year 1913/14 he held the office of dean there. During the First World War he worked on the Encyclopédie polonaise , which was published from 1916 in Freiburg by the Comité des Publications Encyclopédieques sur la Pologne . In 1919 he returned to Kraków, where he was given the chair of his teacher Olszewski, who died in 1914. 1923-1924 he was dean of the Faculty of Philosophy.

On November 6, 1939, he was arrested as part of the Krakow special campaign and taken to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and held in the Oranienburg concentration camp until 1940 . Unlike his brother Stanisław, he survived imprisonment.

As a chemist he has a. a. determined the boiling and freezing temperatures of hydrogen chloride and built an apparatus to liquefy hydrogen. He founded the Society for the Advancement of Pharmaceutical Sciences and was elected chairman. He has contributed a lot to the Polish chemistry and pharmacy vocabulary.
