The Taennchel (German Tännchel ) is a 992 m high mountain in the Vosges in Alsace , France . It is located about 4 km northwest of Ribeauvillé .
The Taennchel massif sits as a mighty red sandstone block on a granite base . It separates the Strengbach - from the Lebertal . Since 1983 there have been lynxes in the woods again .
On the 6 km long summit ridge there are several interesting rock formations (including Rocher des Géants, Rocher du Crocodile ) with presumed prehistoric places of worship , especially the remains of the "Heidenmauer" (Mur païen) , a 2.3 km long fortification of unknown age.
The Taennchel is a popular destination that can be hiked from Ribeauvillé, Thannenkirch , Lièpvre or Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines .
