Talentime is a film directed by Yasmin Ahmad and premiered on March 26, 2009 in Malaysia.

action

Based on the preparations for an in-school talent show, the film shows insights into the families of the participating students Melur, Hafiz and Kahoe and addresses love, illness and death as well as social and ethnic tensions.

Melur, who lives in a well-off family, is chauffeured to rehearsals by the deaf and dumb student Mahesh; they fall in love with each other. Mahesh lives with his mother and older sister; the father has died, the mother's brother is killed in an argument shortly before his wedding.

The students Hafiz and Kahoe compete not only in their musical performances for the talent competition, but also in their academic achievements in the battle for the rank of the best in class. When Hafiz 'mother succumbs to her cancer, Kahoe's compassion wins over his competitive thinking and he accompanies Hafiz' guitar performance at the talent competition on his erhu .

background

The film shows an open corpse cremation according to Hindu tradition. The death of Mahesh's uncle is reminiscent of the Kampung Medan riots in 2001, when grieving Indian family clans and Malay family clans celebrating a wedding got into conflict; there were 6 dead and more than 100 injured.

Like Yasmin's earlier works, Talentime begins with the Basmala ; the Quran verse is not shown in Arabic but in Tamil script: பிஸ்மில்லாஹிர்ரஹ்மானிர்ரஹீம் (Bismillahirahmanirrahim).
