The dam Dasu is under construction Dam with hydroelectric power plant in the administrative district of Kohistan , Province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa , Pakistan . It will dam the Indus into a reservoir. The dam is located about 8 km upriver from the small town of Dasu and 350 km northwest of Islamabad . The Tarbela Dam is located 240 km downstream.

The first groundbreaking for the project took place on June 25, 2014 by then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif . The dam is due to be completed in 2022. It is owned and operated by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and is also operated by WAPDA.

The dam and the power plant are to be built in four sections. In a first step, the dam and the power plant are to be built and 3 machines with 360 MW output each are to be installed. With each additional section, 3 more machines should then be added.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a gravity dam made of rolled concrete with a height of 242 m above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at a height of 957 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 570 m.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 2120 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 45,000 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 52,000 m³ / s.

Reservoir

With a maximum storage target of 950 m, the reservoir will hold 1.41 billion m³ of water and extend over a length of 74 km.

power plant

The installed capacity of the power plant is to be 4320 MW in the final stage  (12 machines with 360 MW each). The average annual production should then be 21.485 billion  kWh . The machines of the power plant are to be put into operation in 4 sections (3 machines per section); after completion of section 1, the annual production with 3 machines will be 8 billion kWh, after section 2 with 6 machines it will be 12.225 billion kWh.

Others

The total cost of constructing the dam and power plant (section 1) is reported to be $ 4.25 billion  , of which $ 3.65 billion for section 1 and $ 600 million for section 2.
