The El Tigre dam ( Spanish Represa El Tigre or Dique El Tigre ) is a dam with a hydropower plant in the province of Mendoza , Argentina . It dams the Río Diamante to a small reservoir. The dam and the associated hydropower plant are also known as the El Tigre hydropower plant complex (Spanish Complejo hidroeléctrico El Tigre ).

The dam is used for power generation and irrigation. Construction began in November 1983. It was completed in August 1986. The dam and the hydroelectric power station are owned by the state ( Sec. En. De la Nación y Prov. Mendoza ). The concession for the operation was transferred to Hidroeléctrica Diamante SA on October 19, 1994.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists of a gravity dam made of concrete in the middle and embankments that connect on both sides. The height of the barrier structure is 24 m above the river bed (maximum height 48.5 m). The top of the dam is at a height of 913 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 660 (or 680) m, its width at the top 10 m and at the base 110 m. The volume of the barrier structure is 691,600 (or 700,000) m³.

The dam has a flood relief system , through which a maximum of 2300 m³ / s can be discharged.

Reservoir

The normal destination is between 895 and 906 m. With a storage target of 906 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.65 km² and holds 7 (or 7.47) million m³ of water. The maximum storage destination is 911.35 m, the minimum 880.8 m. The reservoir serves as the lower basin of the Los Reyunos pumped storage power plant , which is located around 2 km upstream.

power plant

The power plant's machine house is located at the foot of the dam on the left side of the dam. The installed capacity is 11.8 (or 11.94 or 14) MW . The average annual generation is given as 46 (or 50) million  kWh .

The two Kaplan turbines each have a maximum output of 5.9 (or 7.2) MW and the associated generators each 8 MVA . The nominal speed of the turbines is 300 min −1 . The fall height is between 17 and 24.5 m. The flow rate is 30 m³ / s (maximum 40, minimum 12.5 m³ / s).

Others

The operator Hidroeléctrica Diamante SA is 61% owned by Pampa Energía .
