The Hracholusky Dam ( Vodní nádrž Hracholusky in Czech ) is a process water dam on the Mže / Mies in the Czech Republic . It is located 20 kilometers west of Pilsen at the transition between the Tepler Highlands and the Pilsen Hills. The reservoir is used for recreational purposes and is surrounded by holiday settlements.

geography

The dam is located one and a half kilometers west of Újezd nade Mží on the municipal border with Úlice in the Okres Plzeň-sever . The reservoir extends over 22.5 kilometers to the west as far as Vranov and, in addition to the meandering kerbbohlental of the Mže, also includes the lower valleys of its tributaries Úterský potok , Žebrácký potok and Luční potok. On the left-hand side of the narrow reservoir with its mostly steep and rocky bank zones, downstream, lie the towns of Butov, Malovice, Blahousty, Zelenkův Mlýn, Čerňovice , Těchoděly and the forts Vojenský tábor and Staré Lipno. To the right of the flooded valley are the villages of Vranov , Válečkův Mlýn, Beraní Dvůr, Nový Dvůr, Český Mlýn, Rájov and Hracholusky.

To the southeast of Malovice, the Pňovany – Bezdružice railway crosses the reservoir on the 44 m high fish-belly girder bridge Pňovanský most . Between Zelenkův Mlýn and Nový Dvůr, the connecting road Čerňovice- Pňovany runs on a 23-high concrete bridge over the flooded valley. The Plzeň – Cheb railway runs south of the reservoir . The castle ruins of Buben are located two kilometers southeast of the dam .

history

Until the mid-20th century the deeply cut, partly rocky and leading through vast forests valley of Mze was east of Stříbro that the boundary between the Stříbrská pahorkatina ( Lousy hills ) and the Bezdružická vrchovina ( Weseritzer hills populated) only weakly. The river's hydropower was used to operate several mills. A sawmill was built near the Český mlýn ( Bohemian Mill ) at the end of the 19th century. Between 1922 and 1926 the Mies was dammed up at the confluence of the Neumarkter Bach to operate a hydroelectric power station with an output of 552 kW with a four meter high dam. This flooded the Blahoustský mlýn ( Blahussener Mühle ). The reservoir also served as a process water reservoir for the Pilsen industry.

In the 1950s, the small reservoir was no longer able to meet the increased water requirements of industry and agriculture. The National Committee of Plzeňský kraj therefore decided in 1959 to build a larger dam on the Mže to adequately supply the Škoda works , the Plzeň thermal power station and agriculture with process water. At the same time, the dam should also serve to protect against floods and generate energy and ensure a constant minimum water level in the Mže when the water is low . Furthermore, the reservoir should be used for recreational purposes and fishing.

In 1964 the dam was completed and the damming began. Flooded were below the mouth of Úterský brook villages Dolany ( Dollana ) and Těchoděly ( Tichodil ), the hydroelectric power plant Pňovany, the mills Düsterův mlýn ( Dark mill ), mlýn Český, Německý mlýn ( German mill ), Obecní mlýn Dolanský ( Dollaner community mill ), Hracholuský mlýn ( Rakolus Mill ), Obecní mlýn v Těchodělech ( Tichodil Municipal Mill ) and Hublův mlýn (Planer Mill ) and parts of Hracholusky ( Rakolus ). Parts of Butov ( Wuttau ) in the upper part of the reservoir were also flooded.

description

The 26.5 m high and 270 m long earth embankment with a clay core seal is equipped with two overflows. In the right part of the crown there is a side overflow with a long reinforced concrete slide. In addition, the dam is equipped with a manhole overflow, the crown of which protrudes over the side overflow by half a meter. The water drives a small hydroelectric power station with a vertical Kaplan turbine via the manhole overflow and exits through two low outlets.
