The Jinping II hydropower plant ( Chinese 錦屏 二級 水電站 , Pinyin Jinpíng Èrjí Shuidiàn Zhàn ) or the Jinping II dam is a large hydropower plant currently under construction on the "Jinping Bend" of the Yalong Jiang in Sichuan , People's Republic of China . Construction began in January 2007 and when completed in 2014 the power plant will have a nominal output of 8 times 600 = 4800 MW. According to other information it is 8 times 550 MW = 4400 MW.
While the 7.5 km upstream Jinping I dam has a much larger dam and its large reservoir serves to supply water, Jinping II dams a rather small reservoir and is mainly used to generate electricity from hydropower.
At the bend in the river, the conditions are very favorable for hydropower. After a flow length of 150 km the river comes back to its course up to 16 km and there has a gradient of 310 m between both sides. The flow is on the west side of the bend by a only 37 m high and 162 m long weir-like dammed dam. The water is directed to the power plant through four 16.6 km long pressure tunnels. There it drives eight Francis turbines . The two hydropower plants Jinping I and Jinping II with a total of 8,400 MW were planned since 1965.
