The Ertan Dam is located on the Yalong , the longest tributary of the upper Yangtze River , in the circles Miyi and Yanbian the prefecture-level city of Panzhihua in southwestern China province of Sichuan .

The dam has a concrete arch dam as a barrier structure. With its height of 240 or 245 m (there are various statements) it is roughly on the 15th place of the highest dams on earth.

It was built to generate electricity from hydropower . The Ertan hydropower plant has an output of 3300  MW and is housed in an underground cavern . The cavern is the largest in Asia with its dimensions of length 280 m, width 25.5 m, height 65 m.

The electrical power is generated with six generators of 550 MW each. In the first year of operation, the power plant generated 3.9 billion kWh .

The construction work was awarded to a German-Chinese joint venture under the leadership of Philipp Holzmann . Also involved: Hochtief , Changjiang Gezhouba Engineering Bureau from China and Geoconsult from Austria for geotechnical advice. The total construction cost was $ 3.4 billion.

Four more hydropower plants with a total output of 9,050 MW are to be built on the Yalong, including the Lianghekou Dam , Jinping I and Jinping II.

The data in the table are partly uncertain or are given differently in different sources.
