The Kriebstein dam is the dam with the largest hydropower plant in Saxony , apart from the Markersbach and Niederwartha pumped storage plants . The dam is used for power generation , shipping, fishing and recreational activities. It hardly offers any flood protection.

description

Overview and history

The dam of the dam Kriebstein is a curved gravity dam of concrete . The dam was built near Waldheim in 1927–1929 (commissioned in 1930); However, the first plans for the use of hydropower existed before the First World War . The dammed body of water is the Zschopau , a tributary of the Freiberg Mulde .

The Kriebstein dam has by far the largest catchment area (1738 km²) and the largest flood relief system (rated discharge: 975 m³ / s) of all dams in Saxony.

The dam was originally also built for flood protection ; this is indicated by a sign on the dam. However, the degree of expansion is too small for this, i.e. the storage space is far too small in relation to the annual flow rate to be able to provide effective flood protection. A flood can only be reduced somewhat by the retention effect of the reservoir. This was also evident during the flood in August 2002 . At that time, a total amount of about 16 times the storage volume flowed off. Even with an empty reservoir, the flood could not have been absorbed by a long way.

Hydroelectric power plant

The hydropower plant is operated by the KARL Group. In 2006 the operator added a new turbine to the existing turbines. Currently, two Andritz Kaplan turbines and three Andritz Francis turbines have a combined output of 8 MW with a flow rate of 36 m³ / s.

The Andreas Lohs Förderverein Wasserkraftwerk , in which many volunteers are involved, was founded to support the work of the power plants .

Already during the German Reich there was a maritime sports practice camp of the SA on the bank of the facility called Lauenhain-Zschopau dam . The organizers used a replica ship with various original parts for the exercises. It was the Niobe , which had been recreated from concrete using some original parts. The bow and stern are preserved replica and serve as a boat shed.

From 1950 there were at the dam a FDJ - summer camp for recreation for young people.

On October 7, 1962, the first motorboat race for points for the GDR championship was held on the reservoir . European championships were held here in 1965, 1966 and 1967, and even a world championship in 1970. The events were then discontinued.

After the fall of the Wall , since 2006 there have been regular annual races for rating points at the German championships.

Sailing, swimming, camping and other recreational sports in and on the reservoir are possible. There are various tourist facilities, e.g. B. Kriebelland with tree houses, the floating stage and the high ropes course . The nearby Kriebstein Castle is also worth seeing .

The company Fahrgastschifffahrt Talsperre Kriebstein offers round trips on the reservoir during the season and there is a signposted hiking trail, some of which leads directly over the dam.
