The dam Watscha is a dam with hydroelectric plant in Pazardzhik Province , Bulgaria . It dams the Watscha to a reservoir. The associated Orpheus power plant has an installed capacity of 160  MW . The Krichim Dam is about 5 km downstream. The power plant can be operated as a pumped storage power plant.

The dam is owned by Natsionalna Elektricheska Kompania EAD (NEK EAD) and is also operated by NEK EAD.

Barrier structure

The shut-off is a gravity dam of concrete with a height of 144.5 m above the foundation bed . The length of the top of the wall is 420 m. The top of the wall is at a height of 540 m above sea level .

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief with four gates. A maximum of 158 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 2060 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 2700 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 535.8 m (max. 540 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 4.97 km² and holds 226.12 million m³ of water. The minimum congestion destination up to which electricity generation is still possible is 505 m.

Orpheus power plant

The Orpheus power plant is located at the foot of the dam on the right bank of the Watscha. It went into operation in 1975 and is used to cover peak loads . The power plant has an installed capacity of 160  MW . The average annual production is 154 million  kWh . The four Francis turbines in the power plant have a maximum output of 40 MW each. The height of fall is 172 m; the maximum flow is a total of 120 m³ / s.

One of the four Francis turbines is designed as a pump turbine . Their power consumption in pumping operation is 38 MW.
