The Thamirabarani or Tamraparni ( Tamil : தாமிரபரணி Tāmiraparaṇi [ ˈt̪aːmɨrəˌbarəɳi ]) is a river in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The 126-kilometer-long river drains an area of around 5700 square kilometers in the Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts in southern Tamil Nadu. It rises in the Western Ghats and flows into the Gulf of Mannar . Despite its short length, the year-round Thamirabarani is one of the most important rivers in Tamil Nadu.

Surname

Thamirabarani ( தாமிரபரணி Tāmiraparaṇi ) is the Tamilized form of the Sanskrit name Tamraparni ( ताम्रपर्णी Tāmraparṇī ). Since the spelling of Tamil words in Latin script is not standardized, there are other spellings such as Tamirabarani, Tambraparni, etc. The old Tamil name of Thamirabarani is Porunai ( பொருநை Porunai ). The river appears under this name in the ancient Tamil sangam literature . The Sanskrit name Tamraparni is documented in the ancient Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana .

geography

The Thamirabarani has its source at an altitude of over 1800 meters on Agastyamalai Mountain in the Western Ghats near the border between the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala . On its way down from the mountains it forms several waterfalls. In Papanasam the Thamirabarani enters the plane and from there flows in an easterly direction by the districts Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi . He passes the cities of Ambasamudram , Kallidaikurichi , Tirunelveli and Srivaikuntam . South of Thoothukudi , the Thamirabarani forms a delta and flows into the Gulf of Mannar .

Since the headwaters of the Thamirabarani in the Western Ghats receives abundant rainfall during both the summer and winter monsoons, unlike most other Tamil Nadu rivers, it carries water all year round.
