Tanius is a genus of hadrosaurs (Hadrosauridae) from the Upper Cretaceous ( Campanium ) Asia . Only the type species T. sinensis has been scientifically described .

description

Tanius likely resembled Edmontosaurus , but most of the front skull is unknown. In contrast to almost all other hadrosaurs with the exception of Gilmoreosaurus and Bactrosaurus , the contact surface of the zygomatic bone (Jugale) with the upper jawbone (maxillary) was not or hardly laterally widened, but rather stretched longitudinally.

Reference

The fossil record of tanius consists of probably three individuals, one of which disjointed skeletons were found, as well as bones of the skull and the body skeleton . The skeletons come from the Wangshi group in the Chinese province of Shandong , a site from the Upper Cretaceous, in which, in addition to Tanius , fossils of other hadrosaurs ( Tsintaosaurus , Shantungosaurus ), the tyrannosaurid Chingkankousaurus and the micropachycephalosaurus belonging to the Pachycephalosauria were found. Under the Upper Cretaceous sedimentary rocks there is another fossil-bearing layer from the Lower Cretaceous with finds of Psittacosaurus .

Systematics

Carl Wiman published the first scientific description of the genus Tanius in 1929 . The genus could belong to the early hadrosaurs, but a more precise classification within the group is still pending - as with other genera ( Claosaurus , Secernosaurus ) - due to the scarcity of material.

Within the genus, only the type species Tanius sinensis is considered valid, while the species Tsintaosaurus spinorhinus described as T. chinkankouensis Young, 1958 and T. laiyangensis Zhen, 1976 , and T. prynadai Riabinin, 1937 / Young, 1958 as a noun dubium of Bactrosaurus prynadai is considered.
