The government made it clear that this is currently not possible.

biography

Nijmeijer was born in Denekamp , part of the Overijssel province, and studied Romance languages at the University of Groningen . She moved to Pereira , Colombia for one year in 2000 and in 2001 traveled the country with the Caravan for Life to raise awareness of the situation of the rural poor in Colombia. After completing her studies, she returned to Colombia in 2002, against the advice of her family and fellow students. Subsequently, Nijmeijer joined the FARC under the pseudonym Eillen (Eileen or Ellen) and worked as a translator, interpreter and also took part in combat operations.

Found diaries

Tanja Nijmeijer became internationally known after her diaries were found in an attack on a guerrilla camp in 2007. She escaped herself. Her diary entries made headlines, however: she complained about the boring life in the guerrillas, the sexual escapades of the guerrillas and the narrow-mindedness of their commanders.

Secretary to Mono Jojoy

After their diary entries became known, observers assumed that Nijmeijer would be severely punished by the FARC. In 2009, however, the Colombian military found documents, according to which she had risen to the right hand of FARC Vice Víctor Suárez alias Mono Jojoy. It was suspected that Tanja Nijmeijer was also at his side during Operation Sodom , a commando operation by the Colombian army on the night of September 22-23, 2010, in which Mono Jojoy was killed. It was initially unclear whether she was among the 20 or so guerrillas killed. After identifying the last fatality, the Dutch Foreign Ministry confirmed on October 10, 2010 that Nijmeijer was not one of those killed.

Peace process

On October 14, 2012, it was announced that Tanja Nijmeijer was a member of the FARC's official negotiating delegation for the peace negotiations in Oslo . She should work there as an interpreter and translator. Her nomination sparked protests from the Colombian government because she did not want to recognize Nijmeijer as a negotiating partner because she is not a Colombian. Nijmeijer also takes part in the further negotiations in Havana .
