history

Tanzfabrik Berlin was founded in 1978 in a former lamp factory in western Kreuzberg. The Ernst Gettke ensemble there with a villa and factory floors was used by artists and students as a production, performance and residence. A long-term lease with the heir manager of the Ullstein inheritance and the first funding of an "independent scene" secured the development of the then still unknown genre of contemporary dance. The work of the Tanzfabrik Berlin collective shaped its development in West Berlin and West Germany with influences from post-modern dance techniques from the USA and contact improvisation as the basis for dance research and new dance styles. The working method of the Tanzfabrik Berlin changed in the mid-1990s from collective production to a structure with artistic direction. The Tanzfabrik is a model for an artistic production practice, which, accompanied by international networking, is committed to the development of new forms and the development of cross-generational dance training.

Four studios with a studio stage in Kreuzberg accommodate the artistic and educational practice. The studios are used for rehearsals, production and research as well as for courses and workshops. Further training projects for choreographers , dancers, performers and amateurs are also located here. The studio stage provides the framework for visualizing artistic processes.

Since 2010 Tanzfabrik Berlin has had a second location in the Uferstudios in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen , for whose sponsor, "Uferstudios GmbH", it also acts as a partner. One studio is used for the school's course program, two other studios are available all day and for longer periods of time for productions. The size and technical equipment of the studio stage also enable complex productions. Here you'll find annual program ranks and in 2000 organized by the Dance Factory Berlin Biennale Tanznacht Berlin with changing curators instead.

Tanzfabrik Berlin has been a partner of the European network Advancing Performing Arts Project since 2005 .

The Tanzfabrik works with the Hebbel am Ufer Theater , the Free University of Berlin and the Sophiensaele , among others . She regularly takes part in the Long Night of Opera and Theater.

Tanzfabrik Berlin's artistic projects are funded by the Berlin Senate.
