Tapeats Creek is a river that runs entirely within Grand Canyon National Park . It flows from its source on the North Rim of the Canon in a south-westerly direction to the Colorado River at the bottom of the gorge. It got its name from the 2nd Powell Expedition in the winter of 1871–1872 after an Indian of the Southern Paiute who claimed ownership of the stream for themselves. a In terms of water quantity, it is the largest tributary of the Colorado River on the north side of the Grand Canyon.

The source of the river is the most powerful source in the Grand Canyon. In 1970 it was estimated that the spring had a discharge of 180,000 m 3 per day, with the water originating in the Muav limestone . In addition, a small amount of surface water can flow into the river. Tapeats Creek has water year round.

Tributaries

Tapeats Creek has a named left tributary, the Thunder River , a half-mile long river that originates from the natural Thunder Springs at an elevation of 1020 m, and then falls about 370 m before reaching the base a waterfall flows into Tapeats Creek. The Thunder River is the steepest and one of the shortest named rivers in the United States. b

Flora and fauna

Tamarisks and willows are common trees on Tapeats Creek , and horsetail , juggler flowers, and cress grow on its banks . Algae cover much of the stones and rocks in the river. Invertebrate species in and around the river are for example Baetidae , various species of caddis flies and Elmidae . Bladder snails , woodlice and dragonflies are also native.

Tapeats Creek is considered to be one of the best Arizona rivers for catching wild trout; it can be reached via the Thunder River Trail from the North Rim, which is only passable from mid-May to late October. The river can also be reached by rafting on the Colorado River. Rainbow trout are numerous and average 300mm and up to 500mm long.
