The alder fool 's pocket , also alder usury ( Taphrina alni ) is a tubular mushroom from the order of the Taphrinales . It forms fool's pockets on gray alder and black alder .

features

Macroscopic features

The alder fool's pocket initially grows on the green cover scales of female kittens of various alder species such as the gray alder . The fungus causes hypertrophy , and a tongue-like to lobed bile about 3 cm in size grows , which is popularly known as the fool's pocket. It is hollow on the inside and initially greenish, later bright red, then brown in color with age. Vegetative shoots are rarely attacked by the fungus.

Microscopic features

The mycelium grows intercellularly below the epidermis , its asci erupt between the epidermal cells without actual fruiting bodies . They are cylindrical, somewhat truncated at the apex, and measure 18–53 × 10–23 micrometers. They always have eight egg-shaped to elliptical spores. They grow to 6–8 × 3.5–6 micrometers in size. Often they already bud in the ascus.

Characteristics on culture media

The fungus grows slowly on yeast - malt - agar , after two weeks the colony is creamy-pink and buttery with a matt, smooth surface. The pink hue becomes more intense as the colony ages.

Occurrence

The alder fool's pocket is widespread in western, northern and central Europe on alders. there is also evidence from North America. It grows in Central Europe from July to September and appears to be most common in the Alps and northern Germany. Their growth is favored by high humidity.

Taxonomy

The alder fool's pocket was first described by Berkeley & Broome as Ascomyces alni in 1876 . In 1966 the species was classified as Taphrina alni by Gjaerum .
