The Tapsell Foreland is a wide, mainly snow-covered, mountainous and up to 800 m high peninsula on the Pennell coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It separates Smith Inlet from Yule Bay .
The New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the peninsula in 1969 after the British whaling captain Thomas James Tapsell (1798–1872), who in February 1850 during a reconnaissance voyage in the waters south of the Balleny Islands allegedly at 67 ° 0 ′ S , 143 ° 0 ′ E operated but had no mainland sightings despite the high southern latitude. His ship, the Bark Brisk , was part of the whaling fleet stationed on the Auckland Islands between 1849 and 1852 .
