Karl Sablotzke (* around 1932; † February 27, 1985 in Flensburg ) was a German opera singer ( baritone , later tenor ).

Life

Sablotzke completed his vocal studies at the Krefeld Conservatory and at the Cologne University of Music with Clemens Glettenberg. His first engagement was in 1956 as a baritone at the Stadttheater Hagen . From 1958 to 1960 he sang at the Stadttheater Zürich . In the season 1959/60 he worked there in the opera Sonnwendnacht by Nikolai Rimski-Korsakow . In 1960 he moved to the Cologne Opera as a permanent member of the ensemble , where he stayed until 1969. In Cologne, Sablotzke sang an extensive, wide-ranging repertoire, which included in particular the operas of the 19th century and modern. His roles in Cologne included a. the title role in Rigoletto , Don Carlo in The Force of Destiny , Paolo Albiani in Simone Boccanegra , Escamillo in Carmen , Donner in Das Rheingold , the music teacher in Ariadne auf Naxos , the Boyar Shaklovity in Khovanshchina , Mr. Redburn in Billy Budd and the Ökonomierat Sharp in The Young Lord .

From 1969 to 1971 he was again a member of the ensemble at the Stadttheater Hagen. Here he changed his vocal subject to tenor. From then on he sang the youthful-dramatic tenor subject, which he later expanded to become a hero tenor . His tenor debut took place in 1973 at the Staatstheater Kassel with the role of Max in the opera Der Freischütz . In 1974 he sang Herodes in Salome there , with Johanna-Lotte Fecht (title role, later engaged at the Nuremberg Opera House ) and Margarete Ast (Herodias) as partners. Until 1975 he was a permanent member of the Kassel ensemble. At the same time he was a member of the Schleswig-Holstein State Theater in Flensburg from 1974 (since the theater was founded) until his death in 1985 . At his parent company in Flensburg, he took on a large number of roles, almost exclusively leading roles. He stepped there u. a. as Florestan in Fidelio , as Gustavo / Richard III. in A Masked Ball (1974, for the opening of the Flensburg House), as Othello , as Canio in Der Bajazzo , Lohengrin (1980/81 season; premiere: May 1981), as Siegmund in Die Walküre and as Samson .

At the opening of the 1980/81 season he sang Bacchus in a new production of Ariadne auf Naxos (premiere: September 1980), to whom he gave “an excellent vocal profile” thanks to his steadfast and heroic tenor. In the 1981/82 season he took over Don José in a new production of the opera Carmen (premiere: May 1982); “At first a little sedate, he only came out of himself in the last act.” In the 1983/84 season (premiere: May 1984) he was President of Walter in the opera Kabale und Liebe by Gottfried von Eine at the Flensburg Theater . He sang his last opera role in Flensburg in the 1984/85 season. It was the Windmüller Klas at the opera Enoch Arden by Ottmar Gerster , which had its premiere in November 1984th Sablotzke was an "especially in the fourth picture with triumphant heights present" actor who was "to be booked on the credit side". On November 6, 1984 he was heard with this part for the last time. Sablotzke died on February 27, 1985; his exact age was not given in the obituaries.

Sablotzke was considered a "deserved hero tenor" and "valued singer" of the dramatic field, who sang the hero tenor subject in Flensburg "with impressive vocal means". His voice had a “resonance-rich deep and middle register foundation”, as well as a “fully pronounced, robust and radiant high”.

His voice is documented in a few sound recordings. The Italian label Urania released Ferruccio Busoni's opera Turandot on CD in 2009, in which Sablotzke sings the role of Pantalone. This is a radio recording by Swiss Radio ( Bern Symphony Orchestra , conductor: Otto Ackermann ) from 1959. A CD has now also been released as a live recording from Cologne from 1962, in which Sablotzke can be heard as Donner im Rheingold is; Wolfgang Sawallisch was leading the Cologne Gürzenich Orchestra at that time . There are also private live recordings from the Flensburg theater.
