San Pedro de Montalván de Tarabuco (short: Tarabuco ) is a small town in the Chuquisaca department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Tarabuco is the central place of the Municipio Tarabuco and the seat of the administration of the Yamparáez province . The city lies at an altitude of 3292  m on the continental divide between the river systems of the Amazon and the Río de la Plata .

geography

Tarabuco lies between the Altiplano and the Bolivian lowlands in the ridge of the Bolivian Cordillera Central . The climate is a cool, moderate mountain climate with a typical time of day climate , in which the temperature differences fluctuate more strongly during the day than during the year.

The annual average temperature in Tarabuco is around 9 ° C (see Tarabuco climate diagram), the monthly averages fluctuate between 6 ° C in July and 11 ° C in November. The annual precipitation is 600 mm and has four arid months from May to August with monthly values ​​below 10 mm, and a significant humidity period from December to February with monthly precipitation between 100 and 125 mm.

Transport network

Tarabuco is located 67 kilometers by road east of the departmental capital Sucre .

The city is located on the 976 kilometer long national road Ruta 6 , which connects Sucre with the Bolivian lowlands and the border with Paraguay . The road to the west is paved as far as Sucre, from Tarabuco to the east it is unpaved. From Tarabuco a high road leads south to the small town of Icla in the province of Jaime Zudáñez .

Tarabuco is also connected to Sucre and Potosí by a single-track railway line, but this line is no longer in service.

economy

Tarabuco is known for its Sunday tourist market, which sells textiles from the area, but also agricultural products such as corn, potatoes and grain. This is also where " Pujllay " takes place, a great festival that is celebrated every third Sunday in March in memory of a successful battle against the Spanish colonial army.
