The Taramakau River is a river in the Westland District on New Zealand's South Island . It rises in the Dampier and Crawford Ranges of the Southern Alps , 80 kilometers east of Hokitika , just below the saddle of Harper's Pass. It runs 75 km to the west and flows into the Tasman Sea 15 km south of Greymouth .

The river has several small tributaries, the only significant one of which is the Otira River . Its valley forms the western entrance to Arthur's Pass .

Brown trout , rainbow trout and salmon are introduced into New Zealand and live in the river .
