Tarmo Ossi Tapani Kunnas (born October 16, 1942 in Tampere ) is a Finnish literary scholar , essayist and philosophical writer . He is best known for his works, published in several languages, which analyze the attitudes of European intellectuals towards fascism and National Socialism from a historical and philosophical point of view.

academic career

Kunnas was a DAAD scholarship holder in Marburg an der Lahn from 1969–1970 , an Alexander von Humboldt scholarship holder in Munich in 1981 and in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1984. In between he was a Senior Fulbright Scholar at Yale University in 1974 , and he briefly studied in Moscow. From 1974 to 1985 Kunnas was an associate professor at the University of Helsinki , later a full professor at the University of Jyväskylä from 1985 to 2009. After that, he retired, and is still partly teaching. Kunnas was visiting professor at the Georg-August University of Göttingen in 1984 and from 1974–1977 and 1997–1999 at the University of Paris III (Sorbonne Nouvelle).

Tarmo Kunnas has directed several cultural festivals in Finland and has been active in the field of Finnish-French cultural relations. From 1990 to 1995 he was the first director of the Finnish Institute ( Institut finlandais ) in Paris. Among other things, he worked for the Finnish radio and was a columnist for many newspapers, including the Helsingin Sanomat . In Finland he is best known as a specialist in German and French culture and he has dealt extensively with European culture in his writings. Tarmo Kunnas has published books on Nietzsche's philosophy , but also on Knut Hamsun , and wrote about Martin Heidegger in 2016 . There are also essay books on morality, evil, the concept of love and the concept of home, as well as the relationship between politics and literature.
