Tassara is a department in the region of Tahoua in Niger .

geography

The department is located in the west of the country. It extends over the area of the rural municipality of the same name Tassara . In elections to the National Assembly, the Tassara department forms one of eight special constituencies across the country. While the regular constituencies, in which a certain number of MPs are elected, correspond to the eight regions of Niger, those entitled to vote in the special constituencies each elect their own MP.

history

The department goes back to the administrative post ( poste administratif ) of Tassara, which was established in 1971. In 2011, the administrative post was removed from the Tchintabaraden department and elevated to the Tassara department. As a result of the conflict in northern Mali , the Niger government issued a state of emergency in the Tassara department and six other departments in March 2017 , which was subsequently extended several times.

population

According to the 2012 census, the Tassara department has 24,365 inhabitants. From 2001 to 2012 the population increased by an average of 7.5% annually (nationwide: 3.9%).

administration

At the head of the department is a prefect (French: préfet ) who is appointed by the Council of Ministers on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior .
