In the course of this, the Bouza district was converted into the Bouza arrondissement.

In 1998, the previous Arrondissements of Niger were elevated to departments, each headed by a prefect appointed by the Council of Ministers. The department has been divided into communes since 2002. Before that, it consisted of the urban center of Bouza and the cantons of Bouza and Déoulé.
