Tatiana Ivanovna Ustinova

Tatiana Ivanovna Ustinowa ( Russian Татьяна Ивановна Устинова ; * 1913 in Alushta , Crimea , Russian Empire ; † September 6, 2009 in Vancouver , Canada ) was a Soviet geologist and discoverer of the Dolina Geiserow (Valley of the Geysers) on Kamchatka .

Life

After completing her studies at the University of Kharkov Ustinova worked in Ilmen - Nature Reserve in the southern Urals . In 1940 she was transferred to the Kronotsky Biosphere Reserve in Kamchatka with her husband Yuri Averin . In April 1941, accompanied by the guide Anisifor Pavlovich Krupenin, she discovered the valley of the geysers .

Ustinowa stayed on Kamchatka until 1946 to explore the valley of the geysers. Then she worked in Kishinev ( Moldovan SSR ). In 1951 her book Geysers Kamchatkas ( Гейзеры Камчатки ) was published in an edition of 20,000 copies.

In 1989 Ustinova left the Soviet Union for Canada to live with her older daughter Tatiana and her husband, the composer Nikolai Korndorf . She died there in September 2009 at the age of 96. In her will, Ustinova wanted her ashes to be buried in the Valley of the Geysers.
