The waterfalls at the Tatzelwurm are waterfalls of the Auerbach over several up to 10 m high cascades in the Mangfall Mountains , part of the Bavarian Pre-Alps . They are registered in the geotope cadastre of the Bavarian State Office for the Environment under the number 187R003.

Geographical location

The waterfalls are located west of Oberaudorf near the Oberaudorf hamlet of Tatzelwurm ( 764  m above sea  level ), near which the Tatzelwurmstraße and Sudelfeldstraße meet.

In the deeply cut Gumpei Gorge, the water masses of the Auerbach, which flows into the Inn, plunge over several rocky steps a total of 95 m into a rocky, tree-lined gorge a few meters wide .

To the northwest, the terrain rises over the Großer Mühlberg ( 1222  m above sea level ) and the Wildalpjoch ( 1720  m above sea level ) to the Wendelstein ( 1838  m above sea level ) and approximately to the south over the Brünnsteinschanze mountain spur ( 1518  m above sea level ) to Brünnstein ( 1619  m above sea level ).

Origin of name

The waterfall was named after the mythical creature Tatzelwurm over 750 years ago . Possibly the waterfall itself contributed to the creation of legends and may be considered the place of origin of the Tatzelwurm legends: You can hear the thunder of the falling water and see the rising spray from a distance, but you can only see the gorge and the waterfall itself when you stand directly in front of it . Anyone who moves carelessly in this area can fall into the gorge and be "devoured by the Tatzelwurm".

Development

Today the access to the waterfalls is made possible by a developed path and a bridge each in the upper and in the lower part.
