In the Tauern tunnel as a peak tunnel , the Tauernbahn overcomes the mountain ridge of the Hohe Tauern ( main Alpine ridge ) between Böckstein in the Gastein Valley in Salzburg and Mallnitz in the Möll Valley in Carinthia . It crosses the Radhausberg massif exactly below the Gamskarlspitze ( 2832  m above sea level ). The car loading offered between the Böckstein and Mallnitz- Obervellach stations is also known as the Tauern lock . The building is shown in a stylized form in Mallnitz's municipal coat of arms.

The tunnel is - today - straight and 8,371 meters long and was double-tracked from the start. The apex is in 1226  m above sea level. A. achieved. The construction of the Tauern Tunnel was technically very demanding. The construction project began in 1901 and was completed by 1909 by the Redlich & Berger construction company with the help of numerous Slovenian, Croatian, Bosnian and Macedonian migrant workers. Electrification took place in 1925.

The transfer of cars through the tunnel began in 1920, from which the Tauernschleuse developed over time .

In 2004, extensive construction work to optimize safety in the tunnel was completed over the years. In addition, special rescue trains were stationed in Mallnitz-Obervellach and Böckstein by the ÖBB . During these reconstruction work, which was also accompanied by an improvement in the radius , part of the tunnel at Böckstein was exposed, so that the tunnel length was shortened by 179 m from 8,550 m to 8,371 m. The old north portal of Böckstein stands today as a monument to the art of railway engineering next to the new route.

The Mallnitz-Hinterthal stop, which was closed in 2001 and later referred to as the Tauern tunnel , was just outside the south portal, at 43.3 km .

The travel time of the car lock is approx. Twelve minutes.
