Taxi (sometimes in the orthographically correct spelling Táxi ) is a Portuguese rock / pop - band .

history

The four men from Porto came together through the stations Sticky Fingers (band founded in 1974) and then Pesquisa (German: research, band founded in 1975). In 1979, under the influence of the diverse new styles of music after the punk explosion, they formed a mod band and called themselves Taxi. They received an offer from PolyGram for an album, which was, however, subject to the condition that they had to sing in Portuguese instead of English , which they did. The first single Chiclete (dt .: chewing gum) achieved a high distribution and sold over 50,000 times. The first album Táxi was presented to the public in Lisbon in 1981, as a support act for The Clash . It became the first gold record in Portuguese rock music. The album released in 1982 Cairo (dt .: Cairo ) came up with one on film canisters resembling, printed tin as a cover on the market, reaching 15,000 copies sold silver status.

After their 1985 single Sózinho (German: Alone), which was recorded in Hamburg, their first English-language album, The Night , was released in 1987 . In view of the lack of success, the group broke up in the same year.

In 1998 the band got back together to perform with the original line-up at the Roma Mega Rock Festival. In February 1999 a “best of” compilation was released under the title O Céu Pode Esperar (dt: Heaven can wait), with an unreleased piece from the Hamburg recordings of 1985, which gave the album its name. A drum-and-bass - Remix of Cool Train Crew Chiclete was also published, and carried on to a revived interest in the band at. The band subsequently performed live repeatedly, for example at the Casa da Música or at the Vilar de Mouros Festival . In 2009 the band released a new album, which, however, could not build on their early successes.
