The upright bald cypress is a deciduous tree (it sheds its leaves in autumn) and can reach heights of up to 25 meters.

The treetop is loose and not very branched. The branches are upright and 10 to 15 cm long. The scaly leaves are 6 to 8 mm long (and thus shorter than in Taxodium distichum var. Distichum ), curved and finely pointed. These thin twigs arise all over the branches, which are up to 3 cm thick. The cones are smaller than those of Taxodium distichum var. Distichum .

Their natural range extends in North America from Virginia to Alabama .

In Central Europe it is planted much less often than the common bald cypress ; it is also less frost hardy than this one.

Cultivated form

The cultivated form Taxodium distichum var. Imbricarium cv. 'Nutans' differs from the natural form by the limp branch tips; it reaches heights of growth of about 15 meters. It is often cultivated under the synonym Taxodium distichum var. Pendulum and the misnomer Glyptostrobus pensilis .
