Te Horo and Te Horo Beach are two small settlements on the Kapiti Coast in the southwest of the North Island of New Zealand .

As is often the case in New Zealand, an offshore location is linked to an associated coastal location. Te Horo Beach is the larger of the two settlements and is located north of Kapiti Island on the coast of the Tasman Sea . Te Horo lies in a south-easterly direction inland and is connected to Te Horo Beach by a road.

Both places are between Peka Peka and Waikanae in the south and Otaki in the north. " Te Horo " means "the landslide" in the Māori language .

Demographics

In the 2001 census, the two settlements and the surrounding countryside had 642 inhabitants, an increase of 4.4% (27 inhabitants) since the last census in 1996. Most statistical measures differ little from the New Zealand average. So 22% of the population are under 15 years old, 15% are 65 years and older. However, there is a much higher proportion of residents of European origin (93.5% versus the national average of 80.1%) and a larger proportion of couples without children (51.7% versus 39% national average). In the 2013 census, 807 inhabitants were counted.

economy

Around Te Horo there are a few farms and, to a lesser extent, viticulture. Many residents commute to work in Wellington or Palmerston North . The coast attracts visitors for swimming and boating.

transport

Te Horo is on New Zealand State Highway 1 and the North Island Main Trunk Railway . The railway line was from the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company (WMR) as a part of their Wellington - Manawatu - Line built, which opened on December 1, 1886 and a train station in Te Horo had. The WMR was integrated into the national route network of the New Zealand Railways Department on December 8, 1908 . Te Horo train station was closed at that time. A commuter train, the Capital Connection , runs once a day on weekdays from Palmerston North to Wellington and back in the evening, but passengers from Te Horo have to get on at Otaki or Waikanae .

The associated coastal settlement Te Horo Beach is away from the major transport routes and can only be reached from Te Horo via a connecting road, the Te Horo Beach Road .
