Te Kinga is a small settlement in the Gray District of the West Coast regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is located around 30 km southeast of Greymouth and around 3 km east of Lake Brunner on the Crooked River . The Cashmere Bay , which is part of Lake Brunner is open around 1 km southwest of the settlement. Southeast to east of Te Kinga are the small lakes Kangaroo Lake and Lady Lake and around 11 km south of Lake Poerua .
The closest settlements are the Moana Rotomanu Road connected settlements of Ruru and Moana in the north and northwest and Rotomanu in the south.
history
The settlement was established in the early 19th century and earned its income from forestry and the processing of the wood in the sawmills. In 1895 a post office opened in the settlement. The sawmills closed at the end of the 1960s, the post office in 1975. Schools and shops were also closed, and even some of the houses were moved to Stillwater around 22 km further north-west.
economy
Today the tourism associated with water sports on the surrounding lakes is an important source of income for the settlement. The river and lakes are used for boating and fishing, and their banks are used for hiking.
