Team trees

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Team Trees , also known as TeamTrees or #teamtrees , is a fundraising campaign initiated by US YouTubers . The donation goal was $ 20 million by 2020 to plant 20 million trees. The initiators were MrBeast and Mark Rober. All donations were given to the Arbor Day Foundation , an organization that plants a tree for every US dollar. The trees should be planted from January 2020 to December 2022. The planted trees would clean around 1.6 million tons of CO 2 and 116 thousand tons of chemically polluted air during their expected lifetime .

The donation target was exceeded by far on December 26, 2019. In May 2020 a total donation of USD 22 million was reached.

The idea came up on May 24, 2019, when a fan of MrBeast wrote on Reddit that MrBeast should plant 20 million trees to celebrate its 20 million subscribers on YouTube. This post then went viral on all social media platforms. Almost like a meme. American YouTuber Mark Rober then immediately teamed up with MrBeast to start the fundraiser. On October 25, 2019, MrBeast uploaded a video on his channel explaining his plan. Within a very short time, the YouTube video was in the YouTube Trends in all countries. Then other YouTubers joined the fundraising campaign and many of them donated themselves.

The trees are to be planted in various forests in private and public areas with great demand. The goal is to have the trees planted by December 2022 at the latest.

Reactions

Following the announcement of the fundraising campaign by the two US YouTubers, more than 8,000 videos from more than 400 YouTubers worldwide were published about this fundraising campaign.

In addition to social media personalities, large companies also made large donations. Including Verizon , EA , Salesforce ( Marc Benioff ), Shopify (CEO Tobias Lutke ; CTO Jean-Michel Lemieux ) and Tesla ( Elon Musk ).

Discovery Channel made a documentary called #TeamTrees about the campaign, which aired on December 3, 2019. The Discovery Channel also donated $ 100,200 the next day.
