TechEdSat 1 (Technical Education Satellite) was a Cubesat that was released from the ISS . The satellite was in just four months from the San Jose State University , the Ames Research Center of NASA and the Swedish company AAC Microtec been built. The cost was less than $ 30,000.

The purpose of TechEdSat 1 was to test spaceworthy avionics developed by ÅAC Microtec and to conduct an experiment with communication satellites . TechEdSat 1 would have used frequencies from ground stations to communicate with Iridium and Orbcomm satellites. The transmitter intended for this was taken out of service before the start because the license from the FCC was not granted in time.

TechEdSat 1 was launched on July 21, 2012 in an HTV in the Tanegashima Space Center and brought to the ISS. From there it was released into space on October 4, 2012 through an airlock, together with the four other CubeSats RAIKO , WE WISH , FITSAT-1 and F-1 .

The satellite had two monopole antennas for the 2 m and 70 cm band , as well as a patch antenna for 1600 MHz. The satellite broadcast an AX.25 beacon signal and telemetry in an amateur radio band. For this purpose, the IARU coordinated the frequency 437.465 MHz in the 70 cm band .

The successor was TechEdSat 3 , which was launched in 2013 .

Remarks

  1. Although TechEdSat was started in 2012, its COSPAR designation is 1998-067CQ, because it is considered a subsatellite of the ISS, whose ID is 1998-067A.
  2. The release into orbit took place at 15:44 on October 4, 2012 UTC instead
