The IARU is divided into three regions in order to do justice to the different frequency assignments in the three ITU regions introduced in the Radio Regulations . The IARU has issued a band plan in each region . Here, certain areas are recommended in each amateur band for the different operating modes .

The international coordination of QSL card delivery is also the responsibility of the IARU.

Every year in July, the IARU hosts the IARU HF World Championship Contest, one of the largest radio competitions in the world. Twice a year, in May and November, the IARU hosts a global emergency radio exercise , the Global Simulated Emergency Test (Global SET). The IARU issues the Worked All Continents amateur radio diploma .
