The American Radio Relay League (short: ARRL , German  literally: "American radio relay chain" ) is the national association of radio amateurs in the USA , comparable to the DARC in Germany .

The ARRL was founded in May 1914 by Hiram Percy Maxim . The association currently has around 156,000 members. The asteroid (31531) ARRL is named after him.

Services

The ARRL offers various offers for its members and other interested parties, including:

  • Sending QSL cards to other QSL offices of other national amateur radio organizations around the world for reimbursement. Shipping is free for members of the Diamond Club (gold level and above) .;
  • publishing books and magazines on the subject of amateur radio , including the membership magazine called QST ;
  • organizing various competitions, including the International DX Contest, various VHF contests, etc .;
  • the award of various amateur radio diplomas;
  • performing broadcast program for transmitting and receiving amateurs;
  • conducting amateur radio exams on behalf of the FCC licensing authority ;
  • Representing the interests of radio amateurs in the USA vis-à-vis politics, business and science.
