The Suomen Radioamatööriliitto ( SRAL for short , German  "Finnish Amateur Radio Association" ) is the national association of radio amateurs in Finland .

history

It was founded on April 14, 1921 by Nuoren Voiman Liito ( NVL for short , German  about "Junge Kraft Union" ) and received permission to broadcast on August 24, 1921. 1924 was Arvi Hauvonen the first amateur radio license and call sign 3NB, with whom he built his own amateur radio - transceivers for operation. In the same year, the local amateur radio station called Radiola in Helsinki started transmitting for the NVL with an output power of 500  watts . Thus Radiola can be considered Finland's first broadcaster . In the same year he ceased operations and it was almost two years before responsibility for broadcasting was transferred to Yleisradio , the newly founded Finnish broadcaster , on September 8, 1926 .

From 1935 onwards, amateur radio was regulated increasingly restrictively. From now on you had to pass an exam as a military radio electrician before amateur radio was completely banned in 1939. The equipment was confiscated. During the Second World War (1939-1945) Finnish radio amateurs served in positions of importance to the war effort. Finally after the war, in 1947, the general ban on amateur radio was lifted.

The SRAL is a member of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU Region 1), the international association of amateur radio associations, and represents the interests of Finnish radio amateurs there.

The SRAL's in-house magazine is called Radioamatööri ( German  "Funkamateur" ). It appears monthly and is dedicated to various member activities such as contests , campaigns such as SOTA and "DXpeditions", the summer camp traditionally held in July with hundreds of participants and typical amateur radio topics such as transmission and reception technology, antenna technology and test reports.

The Finnish communication scientist Osmo A. Wiio (1928–2013), OH2TK, was President of the SRAL from 1961 to 1966 and from 1994 Honorary President.
