It was founded in 1926 by Japanese radio amateurs with the aim of developing radio technology and using it as a communication medium. Once a year, at the end of August, JARL organizes the Ham Fair , one of the world's largest international amateur radio fairs .
The JARL says of itself that it currently has the largest number of radio amateurs in the world. The JARL as a national umbrella organization is a member of the International Amateur Radio Union .
