They are perennial herbaceous plants . The Tectariaceae species grow terrestrially . The rhizomes are usually short creeping or ascending. They have a dictyostele and have scales. The petiole does not fall off and has a ring of vascular bundles in cross section . The leaf blades are simple, single or double pinnate. Axes and leaf veins , sometimes the blades, are hairy. The nerves terminate freely or are profusely anastomosing .

The Indusia are kidney-shaped or shield-like, in some species also absent. The spores are brown, kidney-shaped, monolet (simple scar) and ornamented in various ways.

The basic chromosome number is x = 40, rarely 39 or 41.

Systematics and distribution

The family is likely monophyletic to the extent given here . It comprises 8 to 15 genera with a total of around 230 species, most of them in Tectaria s. l. The generic delimitations are unclear.

The Tectariaceae family is pantropical.

The genera are according to Smith et al. 2006:

  • Aenigmopteris Holttum , with two to four species in Malesia
  • Arthropteris J.Sm. : The 8 to 20 species are distributed from the tropics of Africa and Asia to New Zealand .
  • Heterogonium C.Presl , with 14 to 20 species in Mauritius , Southeast Asia and Malesia
  • Hypoderris R.Br. ex Hook. , with probably only one species:
  • Pleocnemia C.Presl : The 14 to 19 species of Myanmar through Malesia to the Fiji spread Islands.
  • Psammiosorus C.Chr. : There is only one type:
  • Psomiocarpa C.Presl , with two species in the Philippines
  • Pteridrys C.Chr. & Ching , with seven to eight species in tropical Asia and Malesia
  • Tectaria Cav. (Syn .: Amphiblestra C.Presl , Camptodium Fée , Chlamydogramme Holttum , Cionidium T.Moore , Ctenitopsis Ching ex Tardieu & Christensen , Dictyoxiphium Hook. , Fadyenia Hook. , Hemigramma Christ , Pleuroderris Maxon , Pseudotectaria Tardieu , Quercifilix Copel. ), With more than 170 species in the tropics
  • Triplophyllum Holttum , with about 14 species; they occur in Africa and America.
