Ted Allbeury (born October 24, 1917 in Stockport , Greater Manchester , England , † December 4, 2005 in Tunbridge Wells , Kent ; full name Theodore Edward Le Boutillier Allbeury ) was a British writer of espionage novels .

Life

After the early death of his father, his mother moved him and his sister to Essex and later to Birmingham , where he grew up and went to school. Then he found a job as a worker in an iron foundry, where he also worked as a draftsman in the office. At the beginning of World War II , he applied for the Army and was accepted by the Special Operations Executive of the Secret Service. Thanks to his talent for languages, he also came to many foreign assignments. Allbeury rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel and after the war was among other things responsible for interrogating German prisoners of war before retiring from service in 1947.

After this time he returned to the foundry for some time, but then founded his own marketing and advertising agency JW Southcombe. In the early 1960s he retired from it for three years and tried his hand at breeding poultry and sheepdogs. But after that was unsatisfactory, he wanted to return to the advertising industry. Then he was asked by a friend for advice on marketing a pirate radio station on an old fort off the coast. It got so far that Allbeury got involved himself and from 1965 successfully built up the radio station Radio 390. After differences of opinion with the co-owners, he separated from the station in 1967 and briefly built a new station until the changed legal situation forced him to give up later that year.

After an unsuccessful attempt to win a parliamentary seat for the Liberals , he got back into the marketing industry. In addition, he also discovered the writing activity and the processing of his intelligence experience for himself. He began writing spy novels in the early 1970s. He became one of the most successful British authors of the genre in the 1970s and 1980s, authoring more than 40 books in 20 years. Two of his books were also published under the pseudonyms Patrick Kelly and Richard Butler . Allbeury places less value on technical espionage gimmicks in his works, but develops lively character studies of the actors, whereby in the end the good side typically has the upper hand. His stories are also known for his authentic descriptions of the locations, which he built into the plot with the help of pictures and reports, without having been there himself. Reclam's Crime Encyclopedia noted that he had treated the spy fraud "not with the same mastery" as John le Carré . In addition, one lamented the typification of his image of women: “Allbeury's image of women is negative; almost all women are good-looking, busty and always ready for anything. "

Theodore Allbeury died in 2005 at the age of 88.
