The pond castle ( Czech : Rybniční zámeček ) is a building in the park of the Lednice Castle (formerly: Eisgrub Castle ) in Lednice , Czech Republic , part of the Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape and thus part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the same name .

Geographical location

The building is one of a series of structures by the ponds that separate the Lednice and Valtice chateau complex . It is located on the north bank of the Mittereisgruber pond (Prostřední Rybnik) .

history

The building was commissioned by Prince Johann I von Liechtenstein and erected from 1814 to 1816 by the architect Joseph Kornhäusel . In the 1820s, curtain walls with openwork arcades were added to the building on both sides , but these were torn down again in the 1840s. Renovation projects for the building that were also planned in the 1820s and 1850s were never implemented.

From 1922, part of the building was rented to the Biological Station of the Brno Agricultural University (today: Mendel University Brno ). In the inter-war period, a bunker for the Czechoslovak border fortifications was built directly below the castle, on the banks of the pond . An ornithology station was located in the Teichschlösschen from the 1950s .

building

The shape of the building is less of a castle than a villa and was used as a residence for occasional duck hunts and fishing trips. The lordly used rooms were on the upper floor. A herder lived in the pond, later a gardener, and a cowshed was initially housed here. These rooms were on the ground floor.

The front side of the building faces the lake. Both facades are designed symmetrically. The roof is behind an attic and balustrades . The building has an entrance to both the pond and the street, both crowned by triangular gables. Both entrances lead to the entrance hall, from which a wide, horseshoe-shaped staircase leads to the first floor. A Saa with an exit to a balcony extends over the entire width of the building. From here there is a view across the lake to the Temple of the Three Graces (Chrám Tří grácií) on the other bank of the lake. In addition to the hall, there are two small rooms on the first floor, which are decorated with ornaments and wall friezes.

Worth knowing

The pond castle was built decades before the similarly designed villas by John Nash in London's Regent’s Park , which are considered prototypes of 19th century villa architecture.
