Teis
Teis ( Italian Tiso ) is a fraction of the municipality of Villnöß in South Tyrol ( Italy ). The village lies at the transition from Villnößtal to Eisack valley at an altitude of 950 m . The hamlet of Nafen, a little below, also belongs to Teis. The name of the place is first mentioned in 1157 as "Tisis". Until 1929 Teis was an independent municipality, the fascist administration merged it with the municipality of Villnöß. The place became known for the Teiser spheres ( drusen made of quartz porphyry tuff ) found in the area , which can also be viewed in the Teis Mineral Museum .
history
Due to its climatically preferred location, Teis was already settled in prehistoric times. On the Holy Sepulcher hill on the edge of the village, pottery shards from the Iron Age were found . On this promising hill there was also a chalk fireplace in later times. There, beacons were passed from place to place. The neo-Gothic parish church, built in 1890 by the people of Teis, is dedicated to the Sacred Heart . A church in Teis was first mentioned in 1303.
In the Middle Ages a knight family lived in Teis, the "Lords of Teis". At the Turnerhof you can still see the remains of a castle wall. At the beginning of World War I , the Austro-Hungarian army built trenches and caverns at various levels in the Teiser area. These systems were intended to slow, if not stop, an advance of Italian troops into the Eisack Valley. The extensive protective structures are now partially accessible to visitors.
Under the dictatorship of fascism , the German school in Teis was banned. All cultural activities were severely restricted. Because of the poor economic situation, many farmers lost their farms and the influx of Italians from southern Italy was strongly encouraged. During this time Teis got the nickname "the Walsche village".
Since 1985 there have been partnerships between the municipality of Winkelhaid and Teis, which were sealed with two large partnership celebrations in Winkelhaid and Teis.
Nafen
The Streuweiler Nafen (790 m) is located on a low mountain range terrace between the Eisack and Villnößer valleys . The St. Bartholomew's Church has been the center of attention since 1300 - a jewel in art history with a valuable Gothic winged altar . The hamlet of Nafen, embedded in orchards and vineyards between cherry, nut and chestnut trees, is inspired by a unique charisma.
