Tekle Ghebrelul (born January 1, 1969 in Asmara ) is a Greenlandic football coach of Eritrean origin.

Life

Ghebrelul was born in Eritrea in East Africa and fled in 1981 as a former child soldier in the War of Independence (1961–1991) to Denmark , where he was granted asylum . From there he moved to Greenland in 2004.

Tekle Ghebrelul has been the coach of B-67 Nuuk since 2009. In 2013, he succeeded Tønnes Berthelsen as the national coach of the Greenland national football team and was also the coach of the country's futsal team . He popularized football in Greenland and actively campaigned for Greenland to be accepted into FIFA , which has so far been denied due to the lack of a (sufficiently large) natural grass pitch and the lack of independence from Denmark, which the Faroe Islands also lack. Admission for 2020 has meanwhile been promised. The team also celebrated major successes, which were crowned with a silver medal at the Island Games 2017 .

Because of his origins in Greenland, Ghebrelul became more and more a victim of racism , so at the end of July 2017 he sought a conversation with the Greenland Football Association . Ghebrelul was released on July 27, officially justifying the conflict over his person being resolved. Thereupon the association president John Thorsen, as well as Ghebrelul's assistant coach René Olsen resigned due to ethical differences of opinion; Furthermore, several national players threatened to refuse to play without Ghebrelul's support.

In June 2018 he was signed as the coach of the women's futsal team at Örebro SK . Since February 2019 he has also been the coach of FK Bosna 92 Örebro. From August 2019 to February 2020 he was also co-trainer of the Greenland national futsal team.

Tekle Gherelul ran for the Inuit Ataqatigiit in the 2018 parliamentary election in Greenland and received eight votes.
