Teide cable car

The Teide Cable Car ( Spanish : Teleférico del Teide) is a cable car that leads to the Teide , the highest peak in Spain in the Teide National Park on Tenerife , Canary Islands . It starts at the base station at an altitude of 2,356 m and travels at a maximum speed of 8 m / s to the mountain station at an altitude of 3,555 m within eight minutes. Up to 44 people can be transported per cabin. Construction of the cable car began on September 5, 1963 and was completed on July 27, 1971. It was put into operation on August 2, 1971. Extensive renovation work was carried out between 1999 and 2007.

history

Over the years, various proposals for building a cable car have been developed to make climbing Mount Teide easier. The lawyer Andrés de Arroyo y González de Chávez initiated the project to build the cable car . On his trip to Germany, inspired by the German cable cars around the Zugspitze , after his return to Tenerife in 1929, he began work on a project for a cable car to Mount Teide, for which he assumed all the costs.

The project was to be designed in 1930 by the civil engineer José Ochoa Benjumea after various studies in Switzerland, the Austrian Tyrol and Germany. About 30 years later, after many years of negotiations and changes to the original project, the Teleférico del Pico del Teide - a company founded on October 15, 1959 to operate the cable car - managed to come to an agreement with the municipality of La Orotava and that for to acquire the land required for construction in exchange for a school already built in Aguamansa and about 800 m² of land.

In 1960 the final draft was presented. Based on the 1930s design, the base station was relocated to its current location to reduce cable length and one of the supports was removed. The design used the slope of the terrain to simplify the positioning of the rope supports up to the intermediate station. In the second section up to the terminus, no further support was necessary.

The land survey to determine the final locations of the stations and the four pillars began in April 1962 and was completed in 1963. Construction work began on September 4, 1963 with the excavations for the road to the base station and lasted eight years. The civil engineering and the foundation were entrusted to AG Entrecanales y Tabora. The Italian company Ceretti e Tanfani SA carried out the installation of the cable car. The building material was first transported up by workers and donkeys until an elevator and an auxiliary cable car were installed in 1967.

Construction of the cable car began on July 18, 1971 and was completed on July 27, 1971. On August 2, 1971, the cable car started operating. Between 1999 and 2007 the facility was extensively renovated. Cabins have been replaced by new, more modern gondolas with an aerodynamic design and supports and traction cables have been replaced. Both cable car stations were also adapted to the new conditions and their appearance to the landscape. Today the plant has a new machine system, a new power center and new safety and control systems as well as a regular inspection and safety plan.

Construction of the cable car

The cable car has two stations. The base station at 2,356 m can be reached by car. There are 220 parking spaces available here and there is a bar, a restaurant and a souvenir shop.

A cabin can hold a maximum of 44 people and the journey time is eight minutes. Overall, the system is supported by four supports.

The upper station of La Rambleta is 3,555 m above sea level. Here is the highest telephone booth in Spain and you can see the Seven Cañadas and the Ucanca Valley.

From here, hiking trails lead to the viewpoints La Fortaleza in the north and Pico Viejo in the south. The second route runs almost without differences in altitude and at the end of the way opens up a view of La Gomera , El Hierro , La Palma and the volcanic crater Pico Viejo . Access to the summit crater of Teide, the highest peak in Spain at 3,718 m, is restricted via the Telesforo Bravo path and only possible with the approval of the national park administration.

Corporate structure

The plant is currently operated by Teleférico del Pico de Teide, a joint-stock company founded in August 1959 , in which the town hall of Tenerife holds 49.44% of the shares (as of 2008). The company employs 45 people, its managing director is Ignacio Sabaté and the president of the board of directors is Carlos Alonso (data from 2017).

In 2013 the company founded Volcano Life, SL as a tourism platform and employs around 40 people (as of 2017). The Volcano Teide Experience brand was born to promote and improve a respectful, informative, safe and enjoyable approach to visiting the Teide.

Cable car operation

In the winter months, the cable car operates between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., with the last cabin going up at 4:00 p.m. and the last cabin going down at 4:50 p.m. Between July and October, the last departure is postponed and there are also different departure times on public holidays. The time spent at the mountain station is limited to 1 hour. Ticket prices start at € 13.50 for ascent and descent (as of 2019).

For safety reasons, the runway is not operated in strong winds or when iced over.
