The Sulawesi rainbow fish (Telmatherinidae) are a family of earfish-like fish . They are endemic to Sulawesi , mostly in the lakes near Malili (e.g. Lake Matano and Lake Towuti ), where they have formed numerous species in the course of adaptive radiation and on the islands of Misool and Batanta (only Kalyptatherina helodes ) in front of the Vogelkop Peninsula in western New Guinea . The schooling fish live in fresh and brackish water , sometimes also in the sea water of the mangroves .

features

Sulawesi rainbow fish grow to between 4.5 ( Kalyptatherina helodes ) and 20 ( Paratherina cyanea ) centimeters long. They mainly feed on approach food, i. H. of insects and other small animals falling on the surface of the water. The eggs are attached to delicate aquatic plants during the spawning period (permanent spawners) that lasts several months.

Systematics

The group's monophyly is undisputed and has 26 synapomorphies . The Sulawesi rainbow fish are considered a sister group of the blue eyes (Pseudomugilidae). In 2004 they were raised to a family of their own and together with the Pseudomugilidae, Melanotaeniidae and Bedotiidae form the group of rainbow fish relatives (Melanotaeniodei). The five genera of Sulawesi rainbow fish comprise 17 species. Two clades were found: The genera Kalyptatherina and Marosatherina belong to the first, the other genera to the other clade.
