Great Bell Temple
The Big Bell Temple ( 大鐘寺 / 大钟寺 , Dazhong sì ), originally Juesheng Temple ( 覺生寺 / 觉生寺 , Jiàoshēng sì ) was called, is a Buddhist temple on the street Beisanhuan Xilu in Beijing Municipality Haidian .
history
The temple was built in 1733 in the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty . The name of the temple comes from the famous, during the period of Yongle era ( 1403 - 1424 ) of the Ming Dynasty cast clapper loose Yongle Bell ( Yongle Dazhong ) here, which can be found in the temple today. It weighs 46.5 tons, is 6.75 m high and has an outer diameter of 3.3 m. Originally the bell was named after the Avatamsaka Sutra (Chinese Huayan jing) ("Huayan bell"), which is cast in raised letters on its bell body
The Juesheng Temple has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (4-166) since 1996 .
The temple has housed a bell museum ( Guzhong bowuguan ; English Ancient Bell Museum ) since 1985 .
