Tendra or Tendra Spit ( Ukrainian Тендра / Тендрівська коса ; Russian Тендра / Тендровская коса ) is an uninhabited Ukrainian island in the Black Sea .
The approximately 65 km long and 1.8 km wide island is located in the south of the Kherson Oblast and administratively belongs to the Hola Prystan Rajon . The Tendra Bay, a Ramsar area, lies between the island, which was formed from a spit , and the mainland . Most of the 1289 hectare island is in the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve . It consists of sandy sediments and limestone and is a nesting and wintering place for birds.
history
At the time of Herodotus (approx. 450 BC) Tendra and its neighboring island Dscharylhatsch were called Achilles ' racetrack . In 1790 the sea battle of Tendra took place near the island . There has been a lighthouse on the island since 1827 ⊙ .
