The Oued Tensift or Oued Tansift ( Zentralatlas-Tamazight ⴰⵙⵉⴼ ⵏ ⵜⴰⵏⵙⵉⴼⵜ Asif n Tansift ; Arabic تانسيفت) is an important river in southwest Morocco with a maximum length (including the source rivers) of around 250 km in spring and only 100 km in summer and autumn. The length of the Oued Tensift varies depending on the season and the winter rainfall.
course
The Oued Tensift rises in the High Atlas in a deserted area about 25 km northwest of Telouet . It flows about 10 km north of Marrakech in a westerly direction through the Haouz plain, where it only carries water after heavy or prolonged rainfall due to water abstraction for irrigation purposes. It finally flows into the Atlantic about 33 km south of Safi near the village of Souira Kedima .
function
The Oued Tensift is primarily used to irrigate agricultural land in the Haouz plain.
Tributaries
- Oued Ourika (with tributary Oued Zat )
- Oued Nfiss (French N'Fiss )
- Oued Chichaoua
Canal de Rocade
Via the Canal de Rocade , which was completed at the beginning of the 1970s, part of the water from the Oued Tessaout , which rises in the High Atlas, is diverted into the Oued Nfiss and thus ultimately into the Oued Tensift.
Reservoirs
So far, the Oued Tensift itself has not been dammed because of the sandy and mostly flat terrain through which it flows. The Oued Nfiss, the most important tributary of the Oued Tensift, has two reservoirs:
- Barrage Lalla Takerkoust (approx. 40 km south of Marrakech)
- Barrage Yacoub El Mansour (approx. 60 km south of Marrakech near Ouirgane)
Attractions
At the town of Souira Kedima on the Atlantic coast, the walls of the fortress Castelo Aguz, built by the Portuguese in the early 16th century to secure the sea route to India, rise up . A few kilometers south and above the river valley are the ruins of the Kasbah Hamidouch built by Mulai Ismail .
