Souira Kedima or Souira Guedima is a small fishing resort with about 2,000 inhabitants in the field of rural community ( commune rurale ) of Lama Achate in the province Safi in the region Marrakech-Safi in Morocco .

location

Souira Kedima is located about 35 km (driving distance) southwest of the city of Safi at the often dry confluence of the Oued Tensift into the Atlantic Ocean .

population

Most of the inhabitants are of Berber descent and the regional dialect of the Berber language Central Atlas Tamazight is still often spoken . But Moroccan Arabic and French are also understood.

economy

The main source of food and livelihood in earlier times was fishing ; in the hinterland there was some farming and animal husbandry. Tourism has been a source of income since the 1990s.

history

Due to the lack of written records, nothing is known about the earlier history of the place, which was already called Quz in the Middle Ages . The Portuguese built a fortress called Castelo de Aguz here around 1500 ; In 1506/07 the Portuguese navigator and explorer Diogo de Azambuja is said to have been the royal governor. The fortress was abandoned in 1525.

Attractions

  • The almost windowless outer walls of the Castelo de Aguz , which was built from only slightly hewn stone and provided with two round corner towers , are sloped in the lower part; the interior of the building has already largely fallen into disrepair.
  • The almost untouched beaches of the quiet place invite you to take relaxing walks.
outside
  • About 10 km south, on the western bank of the Oued Tensift, are the ruins of the Kasbah Hamidouch, built in the late 17th or early 18th century on the orders of the Moroccan sultan Mulai Ismail .
