Eberhard von Berckhusen (* around 1525 in Hanover ; † April 26, 1564 ibid) was a German councilor to Duke Erich II and the author of a genealogical book about the Hanoverian patrician families .

Life

Eberhard von Berckhusen came from the old patrician and merchant family von Berckhusen . He was the son of Anton von Berckhusen , "who took over the office of mayor when the Reformation was introduced in Hanover after the old ( Catholic ) council had left the city."

Berckhusen attended the University of Wittenberg from April 1541 , but then - according to his own statements - later studied at the University of Paris , where the “three language proficient” obtained his master’s degree.

In 1553 Eberhard von Berckhusen, who was never in the service of the city of Hanover, published his "News from Hanoverian patrician families", the so-called " Wäskenbok ". This genealogy "of the most important Hanoverian city families, to which the Berkhusen family belonged, primarily pursued the purpose of underpinning their claim to leadership in an increasingly difficult time for these families." With his conservative attitude, which Berckhusen expressed with the Wäskenbok, possibly also his “extraordinary knowledge of both rights” “may have helped him to the position of councilor […]”, to which Duke Erich II. “probably from 1560” raised him.

The grave plate Berckhusens, who died at the age of 39 years can be found on the south side of the Market Church in Hanover.
