ter Hell (birth name: Horst-Günther Richter ; born September 16, 1954 in Norden ) is a German painter , action and video artist . He is a grandson of the painter Willy ter Hell .

Life

ter Hell studied at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1976 to 1981 with Fred Thieler , whose master class he became. In 1979, on his initiative, the artist group and gallery 1/61 Berlin was founded (after the postal delivery district of Kreuzberg ), to which Reinhard Pods , Gerd Rohling and Elke Lixfeld also belonged.

ter Hell comes from the abstract gestural painting of Art Informel and abstract expressionism . His early work Hi Jackson (1979) already shows the artist's strategy: In a provocatively self-confident, direct gesture, he paints and sprays “[b] anally appearing sayings, confessions or even just single words [...] which are at the same time elements of graffiti -Art included ”. Rune-like in shape, red letters he introduced in 1982 on a screen (172 × 177 cm), the word "Jump" is 1981/82 originated. The painting executed in two-line, red and orange cursive breathe learn (spray-paint on canvas, 150 x 470 cm). In 1983 he sprayed the words directly on the walls of the gallery under the title GraffitiIn for an exhibition at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein on Kurfürstendamm .

Ter Hell received a PS1 scholarship in New York in 1982 . In 1983 he was awarded the “Glockengasse” art prize and the Philip Morris prize “Dimensions IV - New Painting in Germany”. The artist lives and works in Berlin .
