The Teram Kangri Group ( Chinese 特拉 木 坎 力 , Pinyin Tèlāmùkǎnlì ) is a mountain range in the Siachen Muztagh , a part of the Karakoram .
Location and characteristics
The highest peak of the group and the Siachen Muztagh is the Teram Kangri I . It lies on the border between China and the disputed Siachen Glacier area near the Line of Control between India and Pakistan. The northeast side of the summit is on Chinese territory and the south side in India.
Ascent history
Teram Kangri I was first climbed on August 12, 1975 by a Japanese expedition led by Hajime Katayama, which received a permit from the Pakistani government. After a lengthy approach over the Bilafond La, the rope team of Kazuo Kodaka and Yasunori Kobayashi climbed the southwest ridge of Teram Kangri II, which they crossed and reached the main summit over the east ridge.
Teram Kangri II ( 7406 m ) was then climbed on August 12 and 13, 1975 by all other expedition members.
Teram Kangri III ( 7382 m ) was first climbed by Japanese mountaineers in 1979.
In 1978 there were politically motivated activities by the Pakistani army in the Siachen glacier area, whereupon the Teram Kangri II was climbed by an Indian army expedition led by Colonel N. Kumar in order to lay claim to the Siachen glacier area. Teram Kangri II has only been climbed one more time since then in 1992 by an expedition approaching over Indian territory.
